Most dangerous teams in IPL 2020

Ahead of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League, we take a good look at all the sides and try to pick the most dangerous team, based on the team composition, performance, and names we could marvel at.
In the past twelve seasons, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have stamped their authority more often than not. While the Chennai-based franchise has a clean as a whistle record when it comes to getting through to the playoffs, team Mumbai has lifted the trophy a record four times. Let’s dig a little deeper and see if we could name one team that deserves the coveted trophy this time around.

Kolkata Knight Riders

A mercurial outfit on their day, the Men in Purple has been an entertaining side to watch. Over the years, KKR has snatched some nail-biting victories. While, on the other hand, the two-time champions have sometimes been floored in a rather hapless manner as well.
For the upcoming season, the Kolkata-based franchise has got Australian pacer Pat Cummins and England’s World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan in the mix. The presence of Andre Russell only adds more shine to their fearless brand of cricket.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Orange Brigade is known for its famed bowling line-up. The men from Afghanistan -- Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi -- add weight to the spin department while seasoned campaigner Bhuvneshwar Kumar, youngster Khaleel Ahmed, and Aussie seamer Billy Stanlake make the pace-bowling department look sharp.
David Warner's batting prowess doesn’t need a mention. He will have Manish Pandey, Jonny Bairstow, and Kane Williamson to help pile on the misery on the opposition bowlers.
Their over-reliance on the top-order turned out to be a curse last season. But, they are still strong contenders for the trophy in the upcoming edition of the tournament.

Chennai Super Kings

The most consistent team in the history of the cash-rich league, the Men in Yellow rely on experience over fresh legs. The MS Dhoni-led side did face a lot of flak as they opted for veterans instead of youth, but team Chennai shut out all the noise by lifting the trophy in 2018.
England all-rounder Sam Curran adds a lot of balance to the side. Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson are proven match-winners and the likes of Ambati Rayudu and Suresh Raina make CSK look like the team to beat.
Josh Hazlewood can light up the event with his nagging line and length. Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur will look to continue from where they left off last season. A spin heavy side, Chennai is bolstered by some big names in that department - Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir, Mitchell Santner, and the recently-acquired Piyush Chawla.

Kings XI Punjab

Yet to win the IPL, Kings XI Punjab have blown hot and cold over the years. Leave aside the prospect of winning the title, team Punjab hasn’t made it to the top five in the last five years. KL Rahul is the face of the 2020 squad. Yet again, they have backed the old gun, Chris Gayle, to come good. The southpaw will share the dressing room with his West Indies teammates - Nicholas Pooran and Sheldon Cottrell.
The Mohali-based outfit has always been about its core domestic group and the current squad is no different, with Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, Krishnappa Gowtham all in the mix. Aided by new-look support staff, led by Anil Kumble, KXIP has the potential to go the distance this year.

 Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore have played three finals so far but their trophy cabinet is still empty. One of the most dynamic sides on paper, RCB have Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Aaron Finch in their ranks. One of the few sides that have yet to have a settled XI, team Bangalore’s bowling has been a concern over the years.
They have retained Dale Steyn and brought in Chris Morris, Isuru Udana, and Kane Richardson. The spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar can keep the best of batters in complete control. If RCB gets their combination right in the initial games, they could prove to be a dangerous side in the tournament.

Mumbai Indians

Rohit Sharma and Co. snuck past Chennai Super Kings in last year's final, sealing a one-run win. This time around, Mumbai Indians will be eager to defend their title. They have roped in Chris Lynn, who could be devastating on his day. In Nathan Coulter Nile, team Mumbai has a potent back-up for veteran Lasith Malinga.
Surya Kumar Yadav is an underrated star who has time and again proved his mettle in the cash-rich league. All-rounder Hardik Pandya gives team Mumbai a shot in the arm. The flamboyant cricketer is a match-winner and has the ability to turn matches in his team's favor in crunch situations.
Jasprit Bumrah at his best can be a nightmare for the opposition batters. Team Mumbai might lose some sleep over the absence of a reputed name in the spin department. Having said that, Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar can be impressive and in Jayant Yadav, they have a spinner who could prove to be handy in spin-friendly conditions.

Delhi Capitals

With a dash of youth in the side, Delhi Capitals can wreak havoc in this year's edition. Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Prithvi Shaw are some of the capable youngsters on the roster.
The addition of Ajinkya Rahane adds a lot more stability to the squad. Team Delhi has a solid southpaw in Shikhar Dhawan while the likes of Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer, and Jason Roy lend more credibility to the batting department.
As far as the bowling line-up is concerned, Kagiso Rabada is the only lethal foreign import. A groin injury might rule him out this season and if that happens, the Capitals will have to fall back to Ishant Sharma as their pace spearhead. The onus to bail the side out of trouble will be on veteran spinners Amit Mishra and Ravi Ashwin and the duo will form a potent quartet with Axar Patel and Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane.

Rajasthan Royals

Not your typical band of boys, Rajasthan Royals hardly come under the limelight. Over the years, the Royals have made match-winners out of home-grown talents.
Jos Buttler, Steve Smith, and Ben Stokes are big names. The trio will have the support of the experienced Robin Uthappa and the hard-hitting David Miller.
We might get to see Shreyas Gopal and Mayank Markande bowl in tandem while the inclusion of U19 star Kartik Tyagi makes for an interesting prospect. With Jofra Archer out, Jaydev Unadkat and Oshane Thomas will have big roles to play.

Our pick...

Picking one amongst these teams isn't exactly a walk in the park but Kolkata Knight Riders make you believe that 2020 might just be their year. In skipper Dinesh Karthik, the Knight Riders have a bankable finisher.
Shubman Gill has made a name for himself so far in his short career. Tom Banton can provide quick-fire starts up-top, which the experienced middle-order can capitalize on.
Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh are destined for glory whereas the fit-again Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Sivam Mavi can bowl lung-bursting spells alongside Prasidh Krishna. Harry Gurney and Lockie Ferguson's roles will revolve around Cummins' availability. An in-form Kuldeep Yadav and ace spinner Sunil Narine solve the jigsaw for the Kolkata-based franchise.

Top 10 fielders on show in the IPL

From flying saves at the point to juggling saves on the boundary line, this IPL has unveiled a lot of men who make a difference with their sheer magic on the field.
When the IPL starts in India, the cricketing world comes to a standstill. This year, it has been no different and it gets bigger when we go into the business end of the tournament.
While the tournament has always been about monstrous sixes and toe crushing yorkers, what separates the champion team from the rest is their fielding. “A run saved is a run scored” is what the experts say and the best in the business is proving that it is true. From flying saves at the point to juggling saves on the boundary line, this IPL has unveiled a lot of men who make a difference with their sheer magic on the field.

10. Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane’s story is one that would inspire every aspiring cricketer. He is a typical talented kid spotted and groomed by the Rajasthan Royals and has become one of the best fielders that the country has produced. He is extremely flexible and sensible.
Be it fielding in the slips, stopping potential boundaries at the point, or near the boundary, he does what the team wants him to do. Speaking about Rahane, MS Dhoni once remarked, “He says yes, to everything”.

9. Brendon McCullum

Here is a superb fielder from the franchise which has arguably the best fielding side in the tournament. He leaps, dives, and saves a ball that could not have otherwise been stopped by anyone but him. He is probably the only man who can bend 180 degrees and take absolute screamers on the boundary.
Baz (as he is fondly called) is an astute fielder and an unbelievable sprinter who flings his arms at anything and everything if the situation demands it.

8. Glenn Maxwell

Fresh from Australia’s World Cup win, Glenn Maxwell adds value to any team he plays for. While he is regarded as one of the biggest hitters currently, he brings more to the plate with his off-spin and excellent fielding skills.
His fielding exploits with Nathan Lyon in an international match took teamwork to a different level. With the Kings XI Punjab languishing at the bottom, Maxwell would be hoping to instill some confidence in the team with his electric presence on the field.

7. Kieron Pollard

Now, who wouldn’t be intimidated by a 6 ft 5 inch Trinidadian standing at the boundary? Apart from taping his mouth, throwing his bat around, and hitting towering sixes, he is also known for his powerful throwing arm and wonderful hands.
Speaking about his work in the field, he had this to say: ”Fielding is an attitude and I enjoy it when I take a good catch.”
The celebration is a part of the lifestyle of Pollard and his all-round abilities make him one of the stars of limited-overs cricket. What else would one expect when his fielding coach is Jonty Rhodes.

6. Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina is one of a new brand of cricketers with oodles of energy and confidence. He likes to be in the game all the time and has a childlike enthusiasm which is contagious.
When a wicket falls anywhere or at any time, you can be assured that Raina is going to be the first one to congratulate the fielder and the bowler. He is a live-wire in the field and has marvelous reflexes and agility. No wonder, CSK’s fielding coach Steve Rixon calls him “?the fielding captain”.

5. David Warner

David Warner is someone who expects himself to succeed every time he steps onto the field and captaincy has only added to his sense of responsibility. When not strategizing and talking to his bowlers, this pocket-sized dynamite can be seen diving and patrolling the covers with his out of the world abilities and has one of the safest pairs of hands.
Talking about fielding, he said: “If we get our fielding right, the bowling and batting will take care of itself.”

4. Dwayne Bravo

This chirpy West Indian pulled off an absolutely stunning run out to dismiss Virat Kohli in a recent match against RCB thereby turning the tide in CSK’s favor. If consistency is one of the main reasons for CSK’s success, then Bravo is definitely one of the secrets. The West Indian is widely regarded as one of the best all-rounders in T20 cricket. The typical Caribean flair is evident in his fielding. In addition to those wonderful low catches and numerous saves at the boundary, his celebrations make him an absolute crowd-puller.

3. Faf du Plessis

From enthralling the viewers with flying saves at mid-off and long-off to being a sensational batting mainstay at the top of the order, Faf du Plessis (also called marathon man) has been a major reason for CSK’s success over the years.
So what makes him so special? If taking one-handed catches is an art, Faf is a master of it. In his own words, “the most important thing is to want the ball” and this guy seems to be wanting it all the time.

2. Steven Smith

Steven Smith is touted to be Australia’s next Test and ODI captain and is certainly living up to this tag. No one can easily forget his fielding exploits while speaking with the commentators during IPL 2012. With his acrobatic skills and an amazing sense of mind, he is probably one of the best boundary riders in the tournament and can save those big hits at the end overs. He is another young talent out of the RR stable who can woo the world with his awesome fielding skills.

1. AB de Villiers

This superman of world cricket is the modern-day synonym of versatility. The whole world stood by his side when he wept after the semi-final loss against New Zealand in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. But this fighter has put everything behind him and continues to do what he does best - ‘being the best’.
Combining his breathtaking fielding skills with his astonishing batting, he is integral for the fortunes of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. With his agility, dives, and direct hits, this modern-day Jonty Rhodes is the man to watch out for.

IPL: Top 10 bowlers with the best economy-rate

The trend of heavier, better bats and shorter boundaries in the age of T20 cricket risks making bowlers an endangered species. The prevalence of flat pitches and the restrictions on bowlers and their field placings compound the fears. But a three-time World Cup winner, the smiling assassin, and the Jumbo are among those who stifled the batsmen and put a lid on the scoring in the IPL over the years.
1. Rashid Khan — 46 matches, 55 wickets at 6.55 per over
Rashid Khan, the leg-spinner, played his maiden IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 10th edition. He smashed an unbeaten 34 off 10 balls, before claiming three for 19 in his four overs as Hyderabad beat Kolkata Knight Riders to reach the IPL 2018 final. He is an integral component of the Hyderabad bowling attack
2. Anil Kumble — 42 matches, 45 wickets at 6.57 per over
Anil Kumble took over as Royal Challengers Bangalore captain midway through the second season, which saw him pick 21 wickets at an economy rate of 5.86, including a spell of 5 for 5 in Cape Town against Rajasthan Royals. Kumble eventually hung up his boots before the 2011 auction.
3. Glenn McGrath — 14 matches, 12 wickets at 6.61 per over
Glenn McGrath is one of the only two pacers — the other being Dale Steyn — in the top-10 list of bowlers with the best economy rate. Turning up for the then Delhi Daredevils in 2008, he picked 12 wickets, including a match-winning 4 for 29 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, at 6.61.
4. Sunil Narine — 110 matches, 122 wickets at 6.67 per over
Sunil Narine, one of the key architects of Kolkata Knight Riders’ two title victories in 2012 and 2014, shot into the limelight with his carrom balls, knuckle balls and skidders. He has bowled an astonishing 1051 dot balls in the IPL so far and boasts the joint-highest number of four-wicket hauls — 6.
5. Muttiah Muralitharan — 66 matches, 63 wickets at 6.67 per over
Muralitharan plied his trade with the Chennai Super Kings for the first three seasons, his miserly spells powering Chennai to its maiden title in 2010. He continued to impress with his bowling during his time at the now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Royal Challengers Bangalore, before calling it a day in 2014.
6. Roelof van der Merwe — 21 matches, 21 wickets at 6.74 per over
Van der Merwe played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second and third seasons, before being signed by Delhi Daredevils ahead of IPL 4. In 2009, after general elections-related circumstances did not guarantee security cover, the second season was played in South Africa where van der Merwe snapped up nine wickets at 7.29 in front of his home crowd.
7. Dale Steyn — 92 matches, 96 wickets at 6.76 per over
The Royal Challengers Bangalore paceman Dale Steyn was ruled out of the last IPL with a shoulder injury after he had impressed in his two outings against KKR and CSK, picking four wickets. In 2013, Steyn’s 19 wickets at 5.66 led the Sunrisers Hyderabad to the playoffs in its debut season. The 31-year-old was signed by Bangalore for his base price of Rs. 2 Crore at the IPL auction for the 2020 season.
8. Rahul Chahar — 16 matches, 15 wickets at 6.77 per over
The 20-year-old leg spinner was picked by Mumbai in 2018 for Rs 1.9 Crore. Chahar starred in Mumbai Indians’ record title-winning season in May last year, taking 13 wickets at an economy rate (6.55 rpo) that kept the batsmen under check. He subsequently won a call up for the three-match Twenty20 series against the West Indies.
9. Daniel Vettori — 34 matches, 28 wickets at 6.78 per over
The former New Zealand skipper played for the Delhi Daredevils and subsequently, Royal Challengers Bangalore. He led RCB to the 2011 IPL final, spearheading the charge with 12 wickets at 6.01. Vettori was with Bangalore as head coach since 2014, before being replaced by Gary Kirsten two years ago.
10. Ravichandran Ashwin — 139 matches, 125 wickets at 6.79 per over
Ashwin’s 13 wickets at an economy rate of 6.10 were instrumental in Chennai Super Kings winning its maiden title in 2010. Under M. S. Dhoni’s captaincy, Ashwin became a potent weapon both in the Powerplay and in the death overs. Recently, Delhi Capitals became the fourth IPL franchise to sign Ashwin after Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant and Kings XI Punjab. His overall figures in the IPL are the best among all Indian bowlers with 50-plus wickets.

IPL took to Instagram to share a story with a picture of the new logo, with the hashtag "#Dream11IPL", and asked fans how they liked it. Defending champions Mumbai Indians, who will be playing the first match of the upcoming season on September 19 in the UAE, also shared the logo on their Instagram, and wrote: "Now taking guard, #Dream11IPL".

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday confirmed the fantasy cricket league platform Dream11 as the title sponsor for the 2020 season of the IPL.

Dream11 bid Rs 222 crore to win the title sponsorship right after Vivo and BCCI suspended their contract for this year amid the Sino-India border conflict.
Under the deal with Vivo, BCCI was receiving Rs 440 crore per year.
Dream11 outbid companies like Tata Sons, Unacademy, and Byju's to bag the sponsorship deal for the cash-rich league.
The 13th edition of the IPL was originally scheduled to begin on March 29 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The tournament will now get underway on September 19. But due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in India, this season of the IPL will be played in the United Arab Emirates.
Contingents of some teams like the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab on Thursday departed for the UAE, where they will undergo quarantine.
Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore are slated to leave for the UAE on Friday.
